Seminar Support Program
Stony Brook is full of talented artists, scientists, engineers, social scientists, physicians, dentists, health professionals and humanitarians, but in many if not most cases we don't know what our accomplished faculty colleagues in other buildings are doing. To acquaint us better with each other's capabilities and interests and to encourage exchange of ideas across disciplines the Vice President for Research is establishing a new program. The following general areas of interest are defined:
• Physical Sciences and Mathematics
• Life Sciences and Basic Health Sciences
• Social Sciences
• Fine Arts
• Humanities
• Engineering
• Marine and Atmospheric Sciences
• Clinical Health Sciences
• Dental Medicine
• Nursing, Health Technology and Management, Social Welfare
If a speaker from another area is invited to give a departmental seminar, the Vice President for Research will contribute $100 toward taking the speaker to lunch. To make sure the kitty does not go broke, the number of contributions to any one department is limited to three during the first year (9/1/02-8/31/03). The privilege of refining the area definitions along the way to preserve the purpose of encouraging bona fide cross-disciplinary activity is reserved. To request these funds please send a copy of the seminar notice annotated with the number of attendees and a brief description of any anticipated collaborations to ghabicht@notes.cc.sunysb.edu. The $100 will be transferred to the sponsoring department's IDC account.
