Multidisciplinary research Initiation Grants (MIG) Awards

2008 MIG Recipients Announced

Note: the RFA for 2008 is now CLOSED

Request For Applications

A new Seed Grant program designed to increase multidisciplinary research activity is being offered by the Office of the VP for Research.  The Multidisciplinary research Initiation Grants (MIG) awards are specifically designed to support NEW collaborations among faculty from the various Stony Brook University (SBU) Departments/Schools as well as Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)/Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL).  Research activity can include projects dealing with basic science studies all the way to applied, translational, and clinical ones.  Up to four $25,000 awards will be funded for the duration of one year.  Awardees will utilize these funds to establish NEW collaborative research projects with the potential to advance multidisciplinary research.

Eligibility

  • Proposals must clearly demonstrate the potential collaborative research project.  To emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of the research, applications must include a minimum of two faculty members from different SBU Schools, and/or participating institutions BNL/CSHL, with clear delineation of project responsibility.  These collaborations must be NEW, not simply a continuation of existing ones.
  • Eligibility for program funding is limited to investigators with faculty level appointments (or appointments in progress) at the time of submission.  Investigators may be state or research supported faculty, and may participate on more than one MIG application, but may only be the PI on one application.

Application Guidelines

  • Full Instructions and Application Form: MIG RFA 2008
  • Applications should be completed and compiled as one PDF document, following the format described in the application form.
  • The budget may not exceed $25,000 for one year. See application for more details.
  • Completed applications should be submitted electronically to Stefanie Massucci at Stefanie.Massucci@Stonybrook.edu, and must be received by Friday, March 28, 2008 at 5:00 p.m., with an anticipated start date of May 1st, 2008.  Applications received after the deadline will be returned without further consideration.
  • An original 4-page form (signed by faculty and department chairs only) should be submitted.

Funding Criteria
Proposal evaluation will be conducted by senior faculty and administrators from the Long Island science community.  Reviewers will be asked to assess the scientific merit and significance of the science, and the future funding potential from state/federal agencies.
