Review Time Considerations

CORIHS recommends consultation with the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) early on in the planning stages of research in order to facilitate the coordination of various deadlines to which the activity may be subject for review. There are separate campus committees that are federally and/or state mandated to review research for compliance with regulations that govern involvement of, for example, animal subjects, recombinant DNA, and radioisotopes.

The length of time required for review of an application by CORIHS is necessarily dependent on the review category into which a given application falls:

• Exempt category projects are reviewed and investigators are notified generally within 2 weeks of receipt date by the ORC.
  
• Projects qualifying for expedited review are sent out to committee members on regular basis. Review is completed generally within 3 weeks of receipt date.
  
• The deadlines for applications (initial AND continuing) requiring full committee review at a convened meeting of CORIHS are approximately 2 ½ weeks prior to meeting date.

The committee (CORIHSa or CORIHSb) that reviews the initial or continuing research study will retain responsibility for review of all amendments, adverse events, and overall oversight associated with the activity during the issued approval period.

For research in which outside funding is being sought, it is recommended that CORIHS materials be submitted far enough in advance of the grant submission deadline to allow for 2 successive meetings of CORIHS.
